Lunula Laser is the current gold standard treatment option for fungal nails with a success rate between 75-89%
Alternative topical treatments such as creams and sprays have a 30-40% success rate while the success rate for oral treatments is 60-70% and have a large number of side effects. Hot laser therapy is also available but can be a painful procedure and is not recommended for people who have poor circulation or systemic illness.
The earlier you seek treatment for a fungal nail condition, the higher the chance of complete resolution.
Factors that reduce the effectiveness of Lunula Laser therapy include: poor circulation, systemic disease e.g. diabetes, unhealthy lifestyle etc. The treatment can still be safe but may take longer to achieve results.
The total number of treatments is dependent on a number of factors however the following is an approximate guide:
Fungus is affecting 50% of the nail or less – 4 sessions, 1 week between each session.
Fungus is affecting between 50-75% – 6 sessions.
Fungal is affecting 75-100% of the nail – 8 sessions.
No, the lunula laser is completely pain free and has no known side effects. This is another point of difference compared to hot lasers which cause pain and can’t be used on people with poor circulation or who have a systemic illness.
As with any nail issue, it can take some time before you start to see results. The area to focus on is the base of the nail where it meets your skin. You should start to see healthy nail slowly growing out here approximately 4 weeks after your final session.
The idea is, each time you cut your nails, we take a little more of the damaged fungal nail each time and healthy nail continues to push through behind. This process can take anywhere between 4-12 months for complete resolution.
Each session of the Lunula laser takes 24 minutes, allowing for 12 minutes on each foot. Even though you may only have one fungal toe nail visible, we still treat both feet (at no extra cost) to ensure we treat all surfaces which may harbor fungus/ fungal spores.
During this consult, we also put a pair of your shoes under a UV light to make sure we are destroying any active fungal spores inside of the shoe.
