Fungal Nail Infections

Fungal infections commonly make nails white and spotty, thickened, yellowish, brittle and crumbly. Approximately 14% of the population have a fungal nail infection so we treat it very regularly.

About Fungal Nail Infections

Do you get thick yellow nails? When your toes are cooped up in footwear that is warm and at times moist, this provides perfect conditions for a fungal infection to come in and set up camp on your nails.

It can affect people in different ways from making the nail white and spotty to the nail becoming thick, yellowish, brittle and crumbly.

How We Get Fungal Nail Infections

Nail infections thrive in moist environments like damp shoes, home showers, and public facilities. Genetics can also play a role in susceptibility. Preventive measures include good foot hygiene, keeping feet dry, avoiding barefoot walking in communal areas, and consulting a healthcare professional if infection is suspected.

How to Prevent Fungal Nail Infections

  • Always wear clean socks and keep your feet dry
  • Dry your wet shoes before wearing them again after activities
  • Wear thongs in public showers
  • Keep your shower and bath clean
  • Check your nails weekly – early diagnosis can result in early treatment

Fungal Nail Infection Treatments

  • Lunula Fungal Nail Laser is the gold standard in treatment
  • Topical treatments that are applied weekly to kill the nail infection and keep it at bay
  • Debride and resect the nail insuring proper nail growth
  • Provide advice on oral treatments that are available

Sunshine Coast Fungal Nail Laser

What is the Lunula Fungal Nail Laser?

The Lunula Laser is a revolutionary class 2 low level laser, which uses two laser beams of varying wave lengths.

The violet 405nm beam is anti-microbial and kills off the active fungal spores.

The red 635nm beam is what really sets the Lunula laser apart from other lasers. This beam acts to stimulate the body’s immune response by creating a localized inflammatory reaction. This increases blood flow to the area to promote nail bed regeneration and speeds up healthy nail growth.

Fungal Nail Laser Frequently Asked Questions

Lunula Laser is the current gold standard treatment option for fungal nails with a success rate between 75-89%

Alternative topical treatments such as creams and sprays have a 30-40% success rate while the success rate for oral treatments is 60-70% and have a large number of side effects. Hot laser therapy is also available but can be a painful procedure and is not recommended for people who have poor circulation or systemic illness.

The earlier you seek treatment for a fungal nail condition, the higher the chance of complete resolution.

Factors that reduce the effectiveness of Lunula Laser therapy include: poor circulation, systemic disease e.g. diabetes, unhealthy lifestyle etc. The treatment can still be safe but may take longer to achieve results.

The total number of treatments is dependent on a number of factors however the following is an approximate guide:

Fungus is affecting 50% of the nail or less – 4 sessions, 1 week between each session.

Fungus is affecting between 50-75%  – 6 sessions.

Fungal is affecting 75-100% of the nail – 8 sessions.

No, the lunula laser is completely pain free and has no known side effects. This is another point of difference compared to hot lasers which cause pain and can’t be used on people with poor circulation or who have a systemic illness.

As with any nail issue, it can take some time before you start to see results. The area to focus on is the base of the nail where it meets your skin. You should start to see healthy nail slowly growing out here approximately 4 weeks after your final session.

The idea is, each time you cut your nails, we take a little more of the damaged fungal nail each time and healthy nail continues to push through behind. This process can take anywhere between 4-12 months for complete resolution

Each session of the Lunula laser takes 24 minutes, allowing for 12 minutes on each foot. Even though you may only have one fungal toe nail visible, we still treat both feet (at no extra cost) to ensure we treat all surfaces which may harbor fungus/ fungal spores.

During this consult, we also put a pair of your shoes under a UV light to make sure we are destroying any active fungal spores inside of the shoe.
