Achilles Tendon Pain

Achilles tendonitis or achilles pain is a heel condition that causes pain, swelling and stiffness on the tendon at the back of the heel.

The condition causes the tendon to become weak, degenerated and inflamed. The achilles tendon joins your heel bone to your calf muscles. Pain is usually at its worst when resting. It is commonly known as the ‘overuse’ injury.

The achilles’ tendon is very important. It helps stabilise your ankle and allows you to push off the ground when walking, running and jumping.

Our Senior Podiatrist Jarrod McGuinness Discusses Achilles Pain

Achilles tendonitis can be caused by various issues, including:

  • Poor lower limb biomechanics, or in other words, your foot or lower limb are not functioning as they should
  • Excessive pronation – this is when the arch of your foot collapses when you walk so there is no shock absorption in the foot
  • Poor or old footwear
  • Up hill running
  • Tight or weak calf muscles – the muscle in your lower leg
  • Reduced ankle range of motion
  • Over use (no resting in in between activity)
