DolorClast® Radial Shockwave Therapy

Shockwave therapy has positive effects on tissue regeneration for tendons, bones, muscles and cartilage. It is a great treatment option for acute and longterm soreness and injury.

Shockwave Therapy Pulses

A shock wave is a single acoustic pulse characterised by a rapid rise to a high peak pressure followed by a rapid drop to below ambient pressure. They are sent to the affected area from the point of contact on the skin’s surface.

The Swiss DolorClast® Shockwave uses single acoustic pressure waves to treat musculoskeletal and dermatological pathologies. It offers and combines two technologies – the propagation of radial and/or focused shock waves – to optimise treatment results.

Shockwave Therapy Effects

Shockwave therapy has positive effects of tissue regeneration.

The effects of shockwave have been well supported in scientific literature, with the molecular and cellular effects on tissue including:

  • Tendons: Regeneration of tendon structure and improves movement of tendon gliding through stimulating lubricin.
  • Bones: Stimulation of bone production through activation of bone forming cells (osteoblasts).
  • Muscles: Improvement in blood flow to increase healing cells, mechanical muscle relaxation and removal of muscle waste products which accumulate after physical activity (lactic acid, substance P).
  • Cartilage: Decrease cartilage degradation and reduce the progression of osteoarthritis.

Principal Podiatrist Jay Lewis Discusses Shockwave Therapy

What to expect from shockwave therapy?

Patients who receive shockwave therapy report a moderate to high immediate improvement in symptoms surrounding the area shockwaved. As the sessions progress our podiatrists will gradually increase the intensity of treatment in accordance with your feedback.

Minor soft tissue discomfort may be experienced within the following 48 hours of your first shockwave treatment which should feel no different to a deep muscle massage or post-exercise muscle soreness. This is a positive response with a clear initiation of soft tissue healing occurring.

For the greatest therapeutic effect Elite Foot Care recommends four to six sessions of shockwave over the course of three to four weeks. All patients are different, with your podiatrist to clearly outline the expected duration of therapy.

At Elite Foot Care we utilise shockwave therapy in a manner which complements our other treatments, including foot orthotics, footwear modification, strength and conditioning programs and other soft tissue modalities.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding shockwave therapy do not hesitate to contact the clinic by phone, email or by making an online appointment.
