Bunions

One of the common foot issues we deal with is bunions. This guide will walk you through the causes, symptoms, and available treatments for bunions, ensuring that you understand how to manage this condition effectively.

What is a Bunion?

A bunion, medically known as Hallux Abducto Valgus (HAV), is a bony bump that forms on the joint at the base of your big toe. This deformity occurs when some of the bones in the front part of your foot move out of place. When this happens, the tip of your big toe gets pulled toward the smaller toes and forces the joint at the base of your big toe to stick out. A bunion can also develop on the joint of the little toe, which is known as a bunionette or tailor’s bunion.

Causes of Bunions

Bunions form as a result of a combination of inherited foot type, footwear choices, and foot stress or injuries that affect the stability of the big toe joint. The following factors can contribute to the development of bunions:

  • Ill-fitting footwear: Shoes that are too tight, too narrow, or have high heels can compress your toes together.
  • Genetics: Bunions tend to run in families.
  • Flat feet: This structural problem can contribute to the formation of bunions.
  • Arthritic conditions: Inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis can be a contributing factor.

Signs and Symptoms

Bunions are usually easy to identify with the noticeable bump on the side of the big toe joint. Other symptoms include:

  • Redness and swelling around the big toe joint
  • Pain and tenderness
  • Calluses or thickened skin at the base of the big toe
  • Persistent or intermittent pain
  • Restricted movement of the big toe if arthritis affects the toe

Stages of Bunion Development

Bunions progressively worsen over time and can be categorised into different stages:

  1. Early Stage: A small bump starts to form with intermittent pain.
  2. Moderate Stage: Increased protrusion with pain and limited motion.
  3. Advanced Stage: Severe misalignment with significant pain and possibly secondary conditions such as hammertoes or metatarsalgia.

Bunion Treatment Options

Early intervention is crucial for managing bunions effectively. Here at Elite Foot Care on the Sunshine Coast, we offer a range of personalised treatments to address both symptoms and underlying causes:

  • Footwear Modifications: Wearing shoes with a wide toe box can help minimise pressure on the bunion.
  • Orthotics: Custom orthotics can provide support and redistribute pressure away from the affected area.
  • Exercise Programs: Stretching and strengthening exercises can improve the alignment and function of your foot.
  • Surgery: In severe cases, surgical intervention may be necessary to correct the deformity. Your podiatrist will guide you through the available surgical options such as bunionectomy or osteotomy.

At Elite Foot Care, we employ advanced diagnostic tools and treatment modalities to ensure you receive the best care possible:

  • Comprehensive Assessment: We perform a detailed examination including biomechanical analysis to identify the exact cause of your bunion.
  • Custom Treatment Plans: Based on your specific condition, we tailor a treatment plan that fits your needs.
