Bowed Legs

Bowed legs, or genu varum, is a condition where the knees remain wide apart, causing a bow shape in the legs. Common in infants, it often resolves by ages 3 to 4. Causes include physiological factors, rickets, Blount’s disease, and genetics. Symptoms include a noticeable curve and gait issues.

What are Bowed Legs?

Bow legs, or genu varum, is a condition where the knees stay wide apart when a person stands with their feet and ankles together. This creates a bow-like appearance of the legs. Bow legs are quite common in infants due to the fetal position in the womb, and in many cases, the condition self-corrects as the child grows.

Causes of Bowed Legs

  • Physiological Bow Legs: Common in infants and typically resolve by ages 3 to 4 as children grow and develop.
  • Rickets: A disease caused by vitamin D deficiency, leading to soft and weak bones, which can result in bowing.
  • Blount’s Disease: A growth disorder of the tibia that causes severe bowing.
  • Genetic Factors: Family history may influence the development of bow legs.

Symptoms to Look Out For

The symptoms of bowed legs include:

  • Noticeable curve in the legs, particularly when the child stands.
  • Uneven walking pattern or gait.
  • Potential knee pain or discomfort as the child gets older.

Diagnosing Bowed Legs

Diagnosis usually involves a physical examination by a healthcare professional and, in some cases, imaging tests such as X-rays to assess the bone structure and rule out underlying conditions like Blount’s disease

Bowed Legs Treatment Options

  • Observation: Many cases in young children are monitored as they usually self-correct. If bow legs continue after 2 years old, treatment depends on the cause of the condition.
  • Bracing: Used in children if the bowing is severe or worsening.
  • Surgery: In rare cases where the condition persists or is due to an underlying disease, surgery may be necessary to correct the deformity.
  • Nutritional Support: Ensuring adequate vitamin D and calcium intake can help in cases related to rickets.
