Pigeon Toes
(Intoeing)

Pigeon toes, or intoeing, is a condition where a child’s toes point inward while walking. Common causes include metatarsus adductus, tibial torsion, and femoral anteversion, typically resolving with age. Elite Foot Care offers expert assessment and management for pigeon toes, ensuring healthy development and mobility in children on the Sunshine Coast.

What are Pigeon Toes?

Pigeon toes refer to a condition where the toes point inward when walking. This inward toeing is common in infants and toddlers and can originate from various parts of the leg, leading to variations in how the condition presents and progresses.

Causes of Intoeing

Intoeing can result from several conditions, including:

  • Metatarsus Adductus: Describes a “C” shaped inward curvature of the foot present at birth, occurring in approximately 1 in every 1,000 births.

  • Tibial Torsion: Characterised by an inward twisting of the shin bone (tibia), often due to fetal positioning during pregnancy.

  • Femoral Anteversion: Involves inward twisting of the thigh bone (femur), which tends to resolve as the child ages.

Symptoms of Intoeing

  • Inward-facing toes: The most apparent sign, visible during walking.
  • Tripping or falling: Increased frequency due to altered foot positioning.
  • Gait irregularities: Noticeable difference in walking patterns.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of pigeon toes tpically involves a physical exam by a podiatrist, potentially supported by imaging tests to understand the underlying cause.

Intoeing Treatment Options

Most cases of intoeing resolve on their own without intervention. However, if improvement is not observed as the child grows, treatment may include:
