Achilles Pain

What is Achilles Pain?

Achilles tendonitis is a heel condition that causes pain at the back of the heel.

Achilles tendonitis is a chronic condition that causes pain, swelling and stiffness of the achilles’ tendon.

The condition causes the tendon to become weak, degenerated and inflamed. The achilles tendon joins your heel bone to your calf muscles. Pain is usually at its worst when resting. It is commonly known as the ‘overuse’ injury.

The achilles’ tendon is very important. It helps stabilise your ankle and allows you to push off the ground when walking, running and jumping.

Our Senior Podiatrist Jarrod McGuinness Discusses Achilles Pain:

Achilles tendonitis can be caused by various issues, including:

  • Poor lower limb biomechanics, or in other words, your foot or lower limb are not functioning as they should
  • Excessive pronation – this is when the arch of your foot collapses when you walk so there is no shock absorption in the foot
  • Poor or old footwear
  • Up hill running
  • Tight or weak calf muscles – the muscle in your lower leg
  • Reduced ankle range of motion
  • Over use (no resting in in between activity)

Treatment for achilles tendonitis at Elite Foot Care may include:

  • Biomechanical gait analysis – this involves doing an assessment to see how your foot and lower limb are performing when you walk
  • Customised foot orthotics – providing a customised shoe insert to support your feet when you walk or run
  • Shockwave therapy
  • Soft tissue therapy such as massage
  • Joint manipulation or mobilisation
  • Achilles strengthening program
  • Treatment for achilles pain can prevent further injury and get you living active as soon as possible!
Talk to us about your achilles problems and we can help treat the issue. Alternatively you can make an online booking.
