Bursitis

Bursitis is the inflammation of the bursae, small fluid-filled sacs that cushion joints, leading to pain, swelling, and limited movement. Causes include repetitive motion, injury, prolonged pressure, infection, and underlying conditions. Symptoms comprise localised pain, swelling, tenderness, and redness.

What is Bursitis?

Bursitis is the inflammation of the bursae, which are small fluid-filled sacs located around joints. These sacs function as cushions between bones and the surrounding soft tissues, reducing friction and enabling smooth movement. When these sacs become inflamed, it can lead to significant pain and discomfort, commonly known as bursitis. This condition can occur in various parts of the body, including the feet, knees and hips.

Causes of Bursitis

Bursitis can result from a variety of factors, including:

  • Flat Feet/ Over Pronation: or high arched feet can make you more susceptible to bursa compression and irritation.
  • Digital Deformities: Bunions, claw and hammer toes can alter the forefoot biomechanics and increase your risk of bursa irritation.
  • Repetitive Motion: Activities that involve repetitive movements or constant pressure on the joints can lead to bursitis.
  • Injury: A sudden injury to a joint or a blow can cause inflammation of the bursa.
  • Prolonged Pressure: Continuous pressure on a bursa, such as kneeling for extended periods, can trigger bursitis.
  • Infection: In rare cases, a bacterial infection can cause the bursa to become inflamed.
  • Underlying Conditions: Conditions such as arthritis, gout, or diabetes can predispose an individual to bursitis.
  • Calf Tightness: can increase the pressure on your feet and result in a bursa becoming inflamed and irritated.

Symptoms of Bursitis

Bursitis presents with several symptoms including:

  • Localised Pain: Pain that is often sharp and concentrated around the affected joint in the hips, knees, feet etc.
  • Swelling: Noticeable swelling at the site of inflammation.
  • Tenderness: The affected area is usually tender to touch.
  • Limited Movement: Difficulty moving the joint without pain.
  • Redness and Warmth: In cases of infection, the skin over the bursa may become reddened and warm to touch.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of bursitis typically begins with a physical examination and a review of your medical history. Additional diagnostic tools may include:

  • Imaging Tests: X-rays, MRI, or ultrasound to assess the extent of inflammation and to rule out other conditions.

Treatment Options for Bursitis

Treatment for bursitis focuses on relieving pain and reducing inflammation. Available options include:

  • Footwear Recommendations to remove the compression on the bursa.
  • Custom Orthotics: to control lower limb biomechanics and offload the interdigital spaces where the bursa is irritated.
  • Shockwave Therapy: to ease the soft tissue inflammation and improve your comfort.
  • Injections: Injection of local anaesthetic to reduce the inflammation surrounding the bursa and restore your comfort.
  • Compression: Using compressive bandages to support the joint.
  • Medications: Over-the-counter anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) to alleviate pain and inflammation.
  • Exercise Prescription: Exercises and stretches to strengthen the muscles surrounding the joint and improve mobility.
  • Surgical Options: In more severe cases where conservative treatments have failed, surgery may be recommended to drain or remove the inflamed bursa.
