Dry Needling

Dry needing is a form of soft tissue therapy designed to release myofascial trigger points, which are defined as tight muscle fibres. Trigger point dry needling can be carried out at superficial or deep tissue level. It is used to release these tight trigger points and allow full function back to the muscle.

At Elite Foot Care dry needling is incorporated within your treatment plan to help facilitate normal muscle function.

How does dry needling work?

Dry needling is believed to have a mechanical effect on muscle fibres. Once a trigger point is identified, the dry needle is inserted in the area to create a local twitch response.

One elicited, the local twitch response will create an involuntary reflex which relaxes the muscle fibre and reduces tension. On a physiological level, it is believed the dry needling will create tissue regenerative effects – including cell migration to the damaged area ultimately stimulating the healing of damaged muscle fibres.

What Can Dry Needling be Used For?

Dry needling can be used across a broad range of conditions. Soft tissue sprains and strains or muscle tightness are the common areas where our podiatrists will utilise dry needling. It is used in many different injuries and in conjunction with foot orthotics and a strength and stretching program.

Common conditions treated with Dry Needling, include:

Dry needling is well supported in literature and is adopted as an effective soft tissue remedy utilised to heal soft tissue pathologies. Additional training is needed to perform this treatment and our podiatrists are qualified to perform this therapy, assuring you are getting the best evidence-based practice available to you.
