Morton's Neuroma

Morton’s neuroma is a condition characterised by a thickening of the tissue around the nerves between the toes, leading to sharp pain, numbness, and a burning sensation. Causes include inappropriate footwear, foot mechanics, and repetitive stress. Treatment ranges from footwear modifications and orthotics to surgical removal.

What is Morton’s Neuroma?

Morton’s neuroma, also known as intermetatarsal neuroma, is a painful condition that affects the ball of the foot, typically between the third and fourth toes. It involves a thickening of the tissue around the nerves leading to the toes, resulting in pain, a burning sensation, and numbness in the affected area.

Causes of Morton's Neuroma

The exact cause of Morton’s neuroma is not entirely understood, but several factors can contribute to the development of this condition:

  • Footwear: Wearing tight, high-heeled, or ill-fitting shoes can place excessive pressure on the toes.
  • Foot Mechanics: Abnormal foot structures such as high arches or flat feet can cause instability, leading to nerve compression.
  • Repetitive Stress: High-impact sports and activities that exert constant pressure on the forefoot can trigger the condition.
  • Other Foot Conditions: Issues like bunions, hammertoes, or previous injuries can increase the risk of developing Morton’s neuroma.

Symptoms of Morton's Neuroma

Morton’s neuroma presents with several characteristic symptoms, including:

  • Sharp, Burning Pain: Typically felt in the ball of the foot, often extending into the toes.
  • Numbness or Tingling: Affected toes may feel numb or exhibit a tingling sensation.
  • Swelling and Inflammation: The area between the toes may become swollen and tender.
  • Feeling of a Lump: Some individuals describe the sensation of having a pebble or fold in their shoe.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis typically involves a combination of physical examination and imaging tests:

  • Physical Examination: Your podiatrist will press on the foot to elicit pain and check for a palpable mass.
  • Imaging Tests: X-rays, ultrasound, or MRI may be used to rule out other conditions and confirm the presence of a neuroma.
  •

Treatment Options for Morton's Neuroma

Several treatment options are available depending on the severity of the condition:

  • Footwear Modifications: Switching to wider shoes with low heels and soft soles to reduce pressure.
  • Custom Orthotics: Inserts that provide support and relieve pressure on the affected area.
  • Padding and Taping: Techniques to support the toes and reduce nerve compression.
  • Shockwave Therapy: Utilised to ease the soft tissue inflammation and improve your comfort.
  • Medications: Over-the-counter anti-inflammatory drugs to reduce pain and swelling.
  • Lifestyle Changes: Reducing activities that exacerbate symptoms.
  • Injections: Local anaesthetic injections to reduce inflammation and pain.
  • Neuroma Removal: Surgical excision of the neuroma may be recommended if conservative treatments fail. This procedure generally offers relief but involves a recovery period.
