Sesamoiditis

Sesamoiditis is the inflammation of the sesamoid bones beneath the big toe, often caused by increased activity, high-impact sports, and improper footwear. Symptoms include pain, swelling, and difficulty in movement. Treatment typically involves rest, ice, footwear modifications, padding, and exercise prescription. Elite Foot Care offers comprehensive care for managing and treating sesamoiditis on the Sunshine Coast.

What is Sesamoiditis?

Sesamoiditis is a painful condition that affects the small sesamoid bones located under the forefoot, typically beneath the big toe. These bones are embedded within the tendons and serve as pulleys, providing a smooth surface for tendons to glide over and enhancing the tendons’ ability to transmit muscular forces. When the tendons surrounding the sesamoid bones become inflamed, it leads to a condition known as sesamoiditis.

Causes of Sesamoiditis

Several factors can cause sesamoiditis, including:

  • Increased Activity: Activities that place excessive force on the balls of the feet such as running, jumping, or dancing increase the risk of developing sesamoiditis.
  • High-Impact Sports: Sports that involve repetitive stress on the forefoot.
  • Foot Structure: High arches, bony feet with insufficient padding, and other foot deformities can predispose someone to sesamoiditis.
  • Footwear: Wearing high heels or poorly fitting shoes that do not provide adequate support.

Symptoms of Sesamoiditis

The primary symptoms of sesamoiditis include:

  • Pain: Generally located under the ball of the foot, typically beneath the big toe. It starts as a mild ache and gradually builds to intense throbbing pain.
  • Swelling: Inflammation around the affected area.
  • Tenderness: The area can be sensitive to touch and pressure.
  • Difficulty in Movement: Pain can increase during walking, running, or even standing, leading to limited mobility.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of sesamoiditis often involves:

  • Physical Examination: A thorough examination by a healthcare provider to assess pain location and severity.
  • Imaging Tests: X-rays, ultrasounds, or MRIs may be used to rule out fractures or other conditions and confirm the diagnosis of sesamoiditis.

Treatment Options for Sesamoiditis

Treatment for sesamoiditis is usually non-invasive and focuses on reducing inflammation and relieving pain.

Rest: Decreasing or stopping activities that aggravate the condition to allow for healing.

Surgical Intervention: In severe cases surgical intervention may be necessary. This could involve removing part or all of the sesamoid bone.
